Wiltshire Traditional & Rare Breed Poultry

Wyandottes

We keep Black, Lavender, Silver Laced and Partridge Wyandottes, their stunning colouring and good nature make them a great addition to the garden.  The hens lay around 200 tinted eggs.  We supply Wyandottes as chicks, point or lay and hatching eggs.  Wyandottes are docile birds and the hens are excellent broodies and make good mothers. The chicks tend to be strong and are quick growers. Their attractive "curvy" shape, generally good disposition and many attractive colour patterns make them a good choice for fanciers as well as farmers.  Our silver laced, black and lavender are all from Alan Brooker a renouned Wyandotte breeder.

Silver Laced Wyandotte

These are the Silver Laced Wyandottes, one of my personal favourites, our hens have been selected for the quality of their lacing and good yellow leg colour.

Lavender Wyandotte

This is a new colour that has been developed by Alan Brooker and is the Wyandotte equivalent of the Lavdender Orpington.

Welsummers

Welsummers lay around 200 very attractive large dark brown eggs each year. An easy bird to look after as they are hardy, friendly and easily handled birds which love to free range and forage for food. We find that our Welsummers eat less food than some of the other breeds when given enough of an area to forage.

Light Sussex

Picture
The Sussex chicken is an alert but docile breed that can adapt to any surroundings easily. They are good foragers. They are happy to be free range and in more confined spaces.  We keep sussex in the light and buff colours. Sussex are a good dual purpose bird with the hens being excellent layers and the cockerels good meat birds.

Buff Sussex

Picture
Both light and buff sussex have the Colombian neck pattern.  They will lay approx 180 tinted eggs per year, an excellent choice for a garden hen.

Cream Legbars

The Cream Legbar is a crested chicken which is a true autosexing breed which means that you can tell the sex of the chicks by the colour of the feathers. It is an old pure breed which originated in the 1930s as a cross between Brown Leghorns and Barred Rock with some Araucana blood in them.  I love Cream Legbar because of the beautiful blue eggs they lay and the birds themselves are very attractive and great to have wandering around your garden.  True Cream Legbars are very difficult to find now.  We try to produce hens as true to breed as possible.

Wheaten Marans

This year we have added French Wheaten Marans to our ever growing list of birds!  These birds lay very dark brown eggs - almost chocolate colour. They do not lay as well as some of the other breeds but for the egg colour alone it would be worth adding one to your flock!

Pekin Bantams

The Pekin is a very gentle bird. They are good layers of small eggs but are broody, making them great mums. They make excellent pets for children as they are tame. They settle very well and require little space. They tend not to scratch around in flower beds so are good birds to keep in a garden. They are normally a robust and long-lived bird that loves company.  We keep a range of colours currently buff, white, millefleur and silver partridge.
